After an eight-month hiatus due to injury, Rodman is back, and Heaps couldn’t be more thrilled. The Washington Spirit star is hailed as a “very unique” talent, both on and off the field.

Rodman’s return is a much-anticipated event, as she last played for the USWNT during their victorious run at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Her contribution was nothing short of spectacular, scoring three goals and helping the team clinch the gold medal. However, recurring back spasms forced her to step away from international duty, making her comeback all the more exciting for fans and teammates alike.

The USWNT is set to face Brazil in a thrilling rematch of the Olympic final. The first encounter will take place on Saturday at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California, followed by another showdown three days later at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. These matches promise to be a test of skill and strategy, with Rodman’s return adding an extra layer of intrigue.

Heaps expressed her excitement during a news conference on Wednesday, saying, “For her to come back with the injuries that she’s had, but to train like she’s been here for the past eight months, that is really exciting for me.” She emphasized the ease Rodman brings to the midfield, noting, “When in doubt, you can get the ball into space for these guys and they will go at any defense and make it almost impossible to win the ball for them.”

Heaps continued to highlight the attacking prowess of the team, stating, “I think they’re such an attacking threat and unbelievable special qualities that they all contain. Obviously, Trin, you know, she has her own and she is very, very unique in the type of player she is. So, so happy to have her back.”

Beyond her on-field contributions, Rodman is also recognized for her off-field impact. Heaps praised her for bringing confidence and leadership to the younger players on the squad, a crucial element in maintaining team morale and cohesion.

Currently, Rodman is the sole member of the “Triple Espresso” forward line on the roster. Her fellow forwards, Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson, are absent due to personal reasons. Wilson is on maternity leave after announcing her pregnancy, while Swanson has been on personal leave since January.

Heaps added, “I’m very, very happy to have Trin back. I think we all are. I think her presence on and off the field is just, it’s different. You get another voice in there and you get another enthusiastic voice, someone that brings energy both on and off the field. And that’s something that you want. That’s something that’s a domino effect and it helps us.”

She further emphasized the importance of Rodman’s presence for the younger players, saying, “You have a lot of new young players here. They want to see that and they want to feel that. And she’s young, like, so they get to see it firsthand from someone like that who also brings a load of confidence as well at her age, which is so crucial in this environment.”

Adding to the chorus of praise, USWNT and Orlando Pride defender Emily Sams expressed her relief at having Rodman as a teammate rather than an opponent. The two faced off in the 2024 NWSL championship match, where Sams’ Orlando Pride narrowly defeated Rodman’s team 1-0.

Sams shared her thoughts, saying, “Yeah, I’m super happy for her [Trinity] that she’s back and after battling back from an injury. I’m just happy to see her back here and smiling and she just seems to be having a great time being back here.”

She continued, “Obviously when we face up against her, when we play Spirit, we just have to be on our A-game. It’s like a one-by-one battle, like on the wing, whoever’s playing outside back. So I really think you just try to do anything you can to slow her down. She’s obviously so good. So it’s a nice change to be on the same side of her in this camp.”
