Tottenham’s Transfer Setback: Mathys Tel Declines Move Amid Injury Woes
In the ever-dramatic world of football transfers, Tottenham Hotspur’s ambitions to strengthen their squad have hit a significant roadblock. On Friday, the club’s hopes of signing Bayern Munich’s promising forward, Mathys Tel, were dashed. Sources have revealed to ESPN that Tel has turned down the opportunity to join Ange Postecoglou’s side, leaving Spurs in a precarious position as they navigate an injury crisis.
Tel, a 19-year-old forward who has been making waves in the Bundesliga, had expressed his desire to explore new opportunities during the January transfer window. Tottenham, eager to capitalize on this, had a €60 million ($62.5m) offer accepted by Bayern Munich. However, despite the attractive offer and the promise of more first-team action, Tel opted to decline the move to North London.
The young French under-21 international has been on the radar of several Premier League clubs. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal are all reportedly interested in the talented forward. Meanwhile, Aston Villa sees him as a potential replacement for Jhon Durán, who recently departed for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.
Tottenham’s offer was particularly appealing because it promised Tel a clearer path to the first team, a significant factor given his limited playing time at Bayern this season—just 458 minutes across 14 games. However, the abundance of opportunities available to Tel ultimately led him to reject Spurs’ advances.
With this setback, Tottenham is now refocusing their efforts on other potential signings. Sources indicate that the club is exploring a deal for Fikayo Tomori, the AC Milan and England defender. However, negotiations are still in the early stages.
The urgency to bolster their defense has been heightened by a knee injury suffered by center-back Radu Dragusin during their Europa League victory over Elfsborg. This injury has accelerated Tottenham’s search for a new center-back, as they continue to grapple with an ongoing injury crisis.
Several key players remain sidelined, adding to the challenges faced by head coach Postecoglou. The list of injured players includes Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, and Dominic Solanke.

Postecoglou provided an update on the injury situation, stating, “They are all kind of [going to return] around the same time, around 10 days. We are talking about Vicario, Johnson, Destiny, Wilson, Timo.” He added that Romero’s situation is more uncertain, with further work needed before a return date can be confirmed.
Currently, Spurs find themselves in a challenging position, having won just one of their last 11 Premier League matches and languishing in 15th place in the table. The combination of poor form and mounting injuries has underscored the need for reinforcements in the January transfer window.
As Postecoglou’s side prepares to face Brentford in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday, the pressure is on to find solutions both on and off the pitch. The extent of Dragusin’s injury will likely dictate the urgency of their transfer activities, as Postecoglou noted, “I think depending on the extent of Radu’s [injury], it might be an area we need to look at and certainly this weekend [we are] exploring some options.”
With the transfer window ticking down, Tottenham’s ability to navigate these challenges will be crucial in determining their fortunes for the remainder of the season.
