Chelsea’s Dominance Continues: A Sixth Straight WSL Title
In a thrilling turn of events, Chelsea has once again proven their mettle by clinching the Women’s Super League (WSL) title for the sixth consecutive season. The Blues secured their victory with a narrow 1-0 win against Manchester United on Wednesday, a match that was as much about strategy as it was about skill.
Initially, Chelsea had their sights set on celebrating their title win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. However, the celebrations were unexpectedly moved up when Arsenal suffered a surprising 5-2 defeat to Aston Villa. This result meant that Chelsea only needed a draw on Wednesday to secure the title, but they went one better with a win.
Under the leadership of Sonia Bompastor, who took over from Emma Hayes, Chelsea has continued to dominate the WSL. Bompastor, reflecting on the victory, expressed her surprise at the timing of the win. “It feels great [to win the league]. I told some players and staff after the game that it feels a little bit unreal because we were probably not expecting to achieve that tonight,” she said. “I was not expecting Arsenal to drop points against Aston Villa.”
For the past three seasons, the WSL title race has gone down to the wire, but this year, Bompastor has managed to secure her first English domestic title with games to spare. If Chelsea wins their remaining two games, they will not only go unbeaten in the league but also surpass the WSL points record (58) they set in the 2022-23 season.
Bompastor addressed the perception that Chelsea’s success comes easily. “I heard some noise about the fact it’s too easy for Chelsea. That’s not easy,” she stated. “When you look at our results, to be able to beat [Manchester] City two times in the league, two times [against] Arsenal and two times [against Manchester] United, I don’t know what people think. It’s unbelievable.”
Interestingly, Bompastor revealed that she stopped watching the Arsenal vs. Aston Villa game after Villa’s second goal. She chose not to inform her players of the result to keep them focused. “Before the game I didn’t mention anything to my players,” she explained. “Some of them were probably aware Arsenal lost, but I didn’t want to mention anything because for me, coming here, I wanted to win the game and not to tell them that information because probably they will get more comfortable with the situation.”
Bompastor, who joined Chelsea from French giants Lyon in the summer, has already made a significant impact. She secured Chelsea’s first piece of silverware in March with a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the League Cup final. Now, she has delivered the club’s eighth WSL trophy in her debut campaign in England.
Her relentless drive is evident in her approach. “I never let my players breathe. I’m always pushing for them to do more,” Bompastor said. “The last few weeks, it was difficult for them because I was the one who was always pushing for more and they were like, ‘Sonia, we achieved already something.’ But that’s never enough. That’s the mentality you need to have when you want to be one of the best teams.”
Looking ahead, Chelsea has the opportunity to complete their second domestic treble on May 18 when they face United in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium. They narrowly missed out on a historic quadruple after being knocked out of the Champions League by Spanish giants Barcelona in the semifinal last weekend.
Bompastor praised her team’s resilience, especially after the Champions League setback. “To be able to come and play an away game three days after the Champions League semifinal loss, I think you have to be really professional but also mentally really strong to be able to bounce back,” she added. “I think because some people maybe think because you are Chelsea, it’s so easy to do that, but that’s not. I already said mentally that’s something really important for the teams and the great teams to be able to stay strong even when you have low in the season.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s loss has intensified the battle for the top three spots. Manchester City is closing the gap for fourth place, with Arsenal just one point ahead. The race for the top spots is heating up, promising an exciting finish to the season.
