Chelsea’s Cole Palmer: The Rising Star Drawing Comparisons to Mohamed Salah
In the world of football, comparisons are often drawn between players to highlight their influence and impact on the game. Recently, Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, made headlines by comparing the club’s forward, Cole Palmer, to none other than Mohamed Salah, the Premier League’s top scorer. This comparison is not just a testament to Palmer’s skills but also a reflection of his growing importance to the team.
Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in September 2023, has been nothing short of a revelation for the west London club. Last season, under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, Palmer scored an impressive 22 league goals. This season, he has continued his fine form, adding 14 more goals and six assists to his tally. These numbers speak volumes about his prowess on the field.
On the other hand, Salah has been a force to reckon with, sitting atop the league’s scoring chart this campaign. With 18 goals and 13 assists, he has been instrumental in helping Arne Slot’s Liverpool establish a six-point gap at the top of the league, with a game in hand. Salah’s contributions have been pivotal in Liverpool’s quest for the title.
However, Maresca’s comparison goes beyond just numbers. He emphasized that Palmer’s influence is not limited to his efficiency in the final third. It’s his willingness to compete in challenging situations that makes the comparison to the Egyptian international pertinent. “He [Palmer] is improving a lot but not just in terms of numbers of goals and assists,” Maresca said during a news conference on Friday. “The second half against Wolves for me was one of the best moments since I arrived here. He was showing personality, he was asking for the ball in any moment that the team needed it.”
Maresca further elaborated on the importance of having players who can step up during tough times. “Liverpool when they have some [tough] moments, Salah is asking for the ball. Arsenal when they have some problem, [Martin] Ødegaard is asking for the ball,” he explained. “We need that kind of player when we are in some difficult moments, who is turning to his teammates and saying: ‘Give me the ball, don’t worry, I will be in charge.'”
He praised Palmer’s performance against Wolves, stating, “This kind of personality that we have to show in a difficult moments. Against Wolves in the second half he was top.”
As Chelsea prepares to take on City at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, the anticipation is palpable. This match is a rematch of both teams’ opening game of the season, which Pep Guardiola’s team won 2-0. Despite Palmer’s irrepressible form since moving to the capital, Maresca believes that his former club, Manchester City, will have few regrets. “Having so many options there I think it was difficult for Pep to give Cole minutes,” Maresca said.
He added, “No one at City was thinking that Cole was not good enough. Everyone was sure that he is a top player. The problem was that if Cole played then Phil Foden has not to play, or [Kevin] De Bruyne. It’s a matter of balance and a matter of decisions.”
Currently, Chelsea is in fourth place in the Premier League, two points ahead of City in fifth. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Palmer to see if he can continue to live up to the high expectations set by his coach and the comparisons to Salah.
