From Coast to Coast: Darryn Peterson’s Whirlwind 48 Hours
When you think of high school sports phenoms, Darryn Peterson is a name that immediately comes to mind. Standing tall at 6-foot-5, this shooting guard has already made waves in the basketball world, and his recent 48-hour journey is a testament to his dedication and talent. Committed to the Kansas Jayhawks, Peterson is no stranger to a packed schedule, but even he admits that the past couple of days have been exceptionally hectic.
“It’s almost normal,” Peterson remarked, reflecting on his whirlwind schedule. “That stuff all comes with it.” Yet, even for someone as seasoned as Peterson, the last two days have been a rollercoaster of events and emotions.
It all started on Tuesday when Peterson showcased his skills at the McDonald’s All American Game in Brooklyn, New York. He delivered an impressive performance with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 assists, earning co-MVP honors and leading the West to victory over the East. But there was no time to bask in the glory. With little to no sleep, Peterson was on a plane to Indiana, ready to compete for the Chipotle Nationals title.
Fast forward to Thursday, and Peterson was back on the court, this time taking a significant step toward his goal of winning the Chipotle Nationals. He poured in 28 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out eight assists, leading Prolific Prep (California) to a thrilling 81-80 overtime victory against Long Island Lutheran (New York) in the quarterfinals.
“It’s been pretty crazy over the last couple of days,” Peterson admitted. Ranked No. 2 overall in the ESPN 100 for the class of 2025, he added, “McDonald’s was nonstop just with intense practices and a lot of different things they had us doing then I came straight here and had practice. I tried to sleep the rest of the day to be ready for today. I usually have at least some time to rest in between, but it’s just been nonstop.”
Despite the chaos, Peterson isn’t one to complain. He understands that this is part and parcel of being a top-tier player, and he embraces every moment of it. In 2023, he made history as the first high school athlete to sign an NIL deal with adidas, a fitting milestone for someone projected by ESPN to be the No. 1 NBA draft pick in 2026.
“I just love the game, everything about it,” Peterson said. “I just focus on the task at hand. I don’t think about anything but what I’m doing right now. I don’t think about next year or the future or anything like that. I was only focused on this game today.”
This laser focus was evident at the end of regulation when Peterson found himself with the ball, down by one, and just 13 seconds on the clock. Despite having missed all six of his previous three-point attempts, Peterson confidently drained a contested three from NBA range, putting his team ahead.
“My coaches joked to me that that was the only three I made all game,” Peterson said with a laugh. “But I wouldn’t even know that because I shot it like I’ve been making them all night. That’s the thing for me. This game requires extreme focus. It’s been a crazy week and crazy couple of days. But I don’t want to lose so I’m putting everything in to winning Chipotle Nationals.”
