Barcelona’s Offensive Prowess Shines in LaLiga Title Race
Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, is brimming with pride and enthusiasm as his team continues to demonstrate an insatiable thirst for goals. This past Sunday, Barcelona delivered a commanding performance against Girona, securing a 4-1 victory that restored their three-point lead at the top of LaLiga. The match was a testament to Barcelona’s offensive prowess, as they scored four or more goals for the 20th time in 45 fixtures this season.
The goals came courtesy of two strikes from Robert Lewandowski, a goal from Ferran Torres, and an own goal by Ladislav Krejčí. This impressive display took place at the Olympic Stadium, where Barcelona’s attacking flair was on full display.
Flick’s side has now netted a staggering 139 goals this season, averaging over three goals per game. They remain unbeaten in 20 matches across all competitions since the start of 2025. Flick expressed his admiration for his team’s attacking mentality, stating, “It’s our idea, we always want to play in offence, attack, create chances. If there is a possibility to try and score a goal, always try and score. This is what I really love about my team. They always want to score goals.”
He further praised the team’s work ethic, highlighting the efforts of players like Frenkie de Jong, who sprinted nearly 90 meters during a counter-attack. “This is the mentality, the attitude of the team and it’s good. I think everyone loves it, to see more goals than normal and of course the fans do. Everyone is happy at the moment,” Flick added.
Lewandowski’s brace against Girona brought his season tally to 38 goals in all competitions, surpassing the 33 and 26 goals he managed in his first two campaigns with the Catalan club. His 25 league goals this year put him three goals ahead of Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid in the race for the Pichichi, LaLiga’s top scorer award.
Flick emphasized the importance of Lewandowski’s contribution, saying, “This is good and this is why we need him. I know he wants to win the Pichichi and I’m very happy that he scored two goals today. But like I’ve always said, the important thing is the team. When we win and when we score goals, maybe the chances that he wins the Pichichi is much more. It is important to focus on the team, to help the team.”
Despite nearing his 37th birthday, Lewandowski remains unfazed by criticism regarding his age. He told reporters, “I know a lot of people are talking about my age, but I’m working since 21, 22 years old until now and I want to play more years at the top level. I feel very good physically. I think looking at the stats there’s no difference now to a few years ago. I am working as hard as ever and want to play at the top level for a few more years yet.”
Barcelona’s victory over Girona was achieved without the services of Raphinha, who was an unused substitute after returning from international duty with Brazil. Flick revealed that Raphinha was not fully fit but expressed optimism about his potential return for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semifinal second leg against Atlético Madrid. The tie is currently level at 4-4 after the first leg in Barcelona.
- Barcelona’s offensive strategy is paying off with consistent high-scoring games.
- Lewandowski’s form is crucial in the race for the Pichichi award.
- Raphinha’s fitness is a concern ahead of the Copa del Rey semifinal.
Flick commented on Raphinha’s situation, saying, “I think more discomfort. I spoke with him in the halftime and I checked again if he’s able to play and he was honest and said ‘Coach, I don’t feel so good.’ Now we have tomorrow to recover and then we train and hopefully he will feel better, so maybe he’s ready for the match on Wednesday.”
