Seattle Seahawks Exploring Trade Options for DK Metcalf Amidst Contract Dispute
In a move that has sent ripples through the NFL community, Seattle Seahawks’ General Manager John Schneider announced on Wednesday that the team is actively exploring trade options for their star receiver, DK Metcalf. This development comes just a day after Metcalf requested to be traded, a request that has put the Seahawks in a position to evaluate their options moving forward.
Speaking on Seattle Sports 710-AM, Schneider emphasized that the situation remains “cordial and professional.” He stated, “Obviously DK has requested a trade, and we are entertaining that. We are talking to a ton of teams, taking offers, seeing what that looks like.” This statement underscores the seriousness with which the Seahawks are approaching this potential trade, as they weigh offers from various teams.
Despite the trade request, Schneider did not completely rule out the possibility of Metcalf playing for the Seahawks next season. He made it clear that any trade would be contingent on receiving the best offer for the organization, rather than simply accommodating Metcalf’s preferences. “The thing to understand here is that our responsibility to [owner] Jody Allen, the 12s, first and foremost is doing what’s absolutely best for the organization A, and then B, what’s best for the player,” Schneider explained. “Hopefully both those things merge and it’s an ideal situation. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t. Hopefully in this situation it does, and that would be great.”
Metcalf, who is under contract through 2025, has been in discussions with the Seahawks regarding an extension, but those talks have not yielded a new agreement. With one season and roughly $18 million remaining on his current deal, the question arises: what happens if Metcalf remains in Seattle? Schneider expressed confidence in Metcalf’s professionalism, saying, “No, I think DK’s a very good communicator. He’s a guy that understands the business. He’s a businessman himself. I think he understands that we’re going to head down this road.”
In a candid moment, Schneider acknowledged the potential for Metcalf to remain with the team, stating, “And at that point, we all turn the corner and move forward. So that’s the way it works. Through this whole process, he’s been extremely professional and respectful.”
Among the teams reportedly in discussions with the Seahawks is the Las Vegas Raiders, according to a source from ESPN. Schneider indicated that the draft serves as a critical deadline for any potential trade, noting, “You definitely want to know what’s going on before draft time.” This timeline is crucial for the Seahawks as they plan their strategy for the upcoming season.
The timing of Metcalf’s trade request has not been without controversy. Schneider confirmed that the Seahawks were disappointed that news of the request leaked on the same day they announced the release of fellow receiver Tyler Lockett. The organization had intended for the day to be a celebration of Lockett’s decade-long tenure with the team. “Probably not intentional, but very disappointed in the timing,” Schneider remarked. “We wanted this to be a very special day. We wanted it to be Tyler Lockett day … I felt bad for Tyler. The TV’s all about DK instead of Tyler Lockett. It kind of correlates with his whole career. This guy is one of the most underrated wide receivers in NFL history.”
Despite the current situation, Schneider was full of praise for Metcalf, highlighting his work ethic and business acumen. “He’s a great worker, he’s a pro, he shows up all the time, it’s just really important to him,” Schneider said. “And I get where he’s coming from to a certain extent. He’s 27 years old, he has very high expectations for himself and he should. So there’s no harm, no foul. We’ll get through this.”
In other team news, Schneider confirmed that linebacker Ernest Jones IV, the Seahawks’ top free agent, underwent a knee cleanup procedure after the season. Describing it as “not much of a big deal,” Schneider noted that Jones has been working out at the team’s facility. “He’s here getting ready,” Schneider said. “We continue to have conversations with his representatives, and hopefully we can knock this out pretty soon.”
