Earlier this week, Rams head coach Sean McVay shared insights on the “Fitz & Whit” podcast, emphasizing that the team’s “first goal” was to retain Stafford as their starting quarterback. McVay highlighted the delicate balance the organization faces in making short-term and long-term roster decisions, especially when it comes to adjusting contracts.
“There is no dispute — and let’s not get it twisted in regarding to anybody wanting him to be our quarterback,” McVay stated. “Now, there’s layers to it. Stafford, who initially signed a contract extension with the Rams in March 2022, had two seasons remaining on that extension, with $4 million guaranteed in 2025 and none in 2026. Last offseason, Stafford agreed to a reworked contract, a process that extended until the day the Rams reported to training camp. McVay expressed his desire for clarity on Stafford’s situation “sooner than later” after the season ended.
“I’m sure proud of the body of work and really proud of the way that he’s played,” McVay remarked during his end-of-season news conference. “The coolest thing you can say about Matthew is he shines the brightest on the biggest stages. When you look at the seven playoff games that he’s played in since he’s been a Ram, he certainly gives you a chance every time you step out on the field, and for that I’m sure appreciative.”
Stafford’s journey to Los Angeles began after spending his first 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions. The Rams traded for him before the 2021 season, and in his debut season with the team, Stafford led the Rams to victory in Super Bowl LVI.
Last season, Stafford’s performance was nothing short of impressive. In 16 games, he completed 65.8% of his passes, amassing 3,762 yards, with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. As he continues to make his mark in the NFL, Stafford is just 191 yards shy of reaching 60,000 passing yards, a milestone achieved by only nine other quarterbacks in the league’s history.
