Jaire Alexander’s Future with the Packers: A Story of Uncertainty and Hope
GREEN BAY, Wis. – In the world of professional football, few things are as unpredictable as the future of a star player. This is especially true for the Green Bay Packers’ cornerback, Jaire Alexander. Once thought to be on the brink of a definitive split, there’s now a glimmer of hope that Alexander might remain with the Packers for the 2025 season.
According to a source who spoke with ESPN on Tuesday, the situation is still very much in flux. All options are on the table: a release, a trade, or a return to the team. Both Alexander and the Packers have expressed their frustrations over the past two seasons, which have been marred by injuries and a suspension.
After the conclusion of last weekend’s draft, where the Packers waited until the seventh round to select a cornerback, Tulane’s Micah Robinson, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst remained noncommittal about Alexander’s future. “We’ll work through that as we go,” Gutekunst said. “But no updates there, and he is on our roster right now and that’s how we’ll proceed. But we’ll figure that as we go along.”
Gutekunst, who had previously expressed a desire to get something in return for Alexander if he wasn’t going to be on the team, stopped short of confirming Alexander’s presence on the roster for the upcoming season. “No, I’m just saying nothing’s changed,” Gutekunst reiterated. “No updates. We’ll proceed as we go for right now, and we’ll see how it.”
For the second consecutive season, Alexander appeared in only seven of the 17 regular-season games in 2044. Despite practicing on a semi-regular basis, he did not play after November 17 and was placed on injured reserve only in the final week of the season. He underwent knee surgery for a torn PCL. Nevertheless, he managed to finish second on the team in pass breakups (seven) and tied for second in interceptions (two).
The Packers kicked off their offseason program last week, albeit virtually, due to the congestion around Lambeau Field, which hosted the draft. Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed that Alexander participated in the virtual sessions, but it remains unclear if he reported to Green Bay for the voluntary in-person workouts that began on Monday. Alexander stands to earn a $700,000 workout bonus if he participates in the requisite number of offseason workouts.
As a 2018 first-round pick, Alexander has two years left on his four-year, $84 million contract extension, which once made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. If the Packers decide to release him, they would gain nearly $6.8 million in salary cap space for 2025, or more than $17 million if they designate him a post-June 1 cut.
