Breece Hall Expected to Return as Jets Face Jaguars Amid Struggles
It’s been a tough season for the New York Jets, but there’s a glimmer of hope heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After sitting out last week with a knee injury, running back Breece Hall is expected to return to the lineup at EverBank Stadium. For a team that’s been struggling to find its footing, Hall’s return could provide a much-needed boost.
“He looks good right now, so it’s promising,” said interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich on Friday after practice. That’s a sigh of relief for Jets fans, especially since earlier in the week, Hall was reportedly “struggling a bit,” according to Ulbrich. But after returning to practice on Friday, Hall is officially listed as questionable for the game. The Jets, currently sitting at 3-10 and riding a four-game losing streak, could use all the help they can get.
Hall’s Season of Highs and Lows
It’s been a rollercoaster of a season for Hall, who injured his surgically repaired left knee on Nov. 17 in a game against the Indianapolis Colts. The injury, described as a hyperextension with an MCL issue, sidelined him during the Jets’ Nov. 24 bye week. Unfortunately, Hall aggravated the injury on Dec. 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, forcing him to miss last week’s game.
Hall’s frustration has been evident. After losing a fumble in the 26-21 loss to the Seahawks, he took responsibility for the defeat, saying, “This year has probably been the most trying year of my life.” It’s hard to argue with him. Hall entered the season with high expectations, even predicting a 1,000-yard rushing campaign. But so far, he’s managed just 692 rushing yards and has a career-high six fumbles (one lost). He’s had only one 100-yard rushing game and one 100-yard receiving game this season.
Jets’ Backfield Depth Tested
Even with Hall’s return, don’t expect him to carry the full load against the Jaguars. The Jets have seen promising performances from rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, who combined for 148 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown in last week’s 32-26 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins. Their emergence could mean a reduced role for Hall as he works his way back to full strength.
However, the Jets’ backfield depth has taken a hit. Kene Nwangwu, who electrified fans with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown two weeks ago, is heading to injured reserve with a broken hand. That leaves the Jets thin at running back, making Hall’s return even more critical.
Defensive Concerns Add to Jets’ Woes
It’s not just the offense that’s dealing with injuries. The Jets’ secondary could be shorthanded against the Jaguars. Cornerback D.J. Reed is listed as questionable with a groin injury, while Brandin Echols is doubtful due to a shoulder issue. If Reed can’t go, rookie Qwan’tez Stiggers, a 2024 draft pick who spent last season in the CFL, could make his first NFL start. On the bright side, star cornerback Sauce Gardner is set to return after missing one game with a hamstring injury.
What to Watch For
As the Jets prepare to face the Jaguars, here are a few key storylines to keep an eye on:
- Breece Hall’s Impact: How much will Hall contribute in his first game back? Will he regain his early-season form, or will the Jets ease him back into action?
- Rookie Running Backs: Can Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis continue their strong play and provide a spark for the Jets’ offense?
- Secondary Depth: How will the Jets’ defense hold up if D.J. Reed and Brandin Echols are unavailable? Will Qwan’tez Stiggers rise to the occasion?
With a 3-10 record and a four-game losing streak, the Jets are desperate for a win. The return of Breece Hall, combined with the emergence of their rookie running backs, could give them a fighting chance against the Jaguars. But with injuries piling up on both sides of the ball, it’s clear that the Jets have their work cut out for them.
Sunday’s game at EverBank Stadium will be a test of resilience for this struggling team. Can they turn things around, or will their season continue to spiral? One thing’s for sure: all eyes will be on Breece Hall as he looks to make his comeback.
