Thunder Triumph Over Spurs Amidst Third-Quarter Tensions
In a game that was as much about grit as it was about skill, the Oklahoma City Thunder managed to secure a 146-132 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. The match, held in San Antonio, was marked by a heated third-quarter altercation that saw three players ejected, adding a layer of drama to an already intense contest.
As the dust settled, Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams lightened the mood with a touch of humor during his postgame interview with ESPN. “We had an altercation?” he quipped, before adding, “It made us refocus, figure out what’s important.”
The Incident Unfolds
The tension reached its peak with 3:00 left in the third quarter. Guarding San Antonio’s Julian Champagnie on the wing, Oklahoma City’s Kenrich Williams took an elbow to the jaw. This was as Champagnie fired a pass to Stephon Castle, who then assisted Jeremy Sochan for a two-handed jam. The elbow sparked a shoving match between Williams and Champagnie near the scorer’s table.
Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson commented on the incident, saying, “When people are aggressive, there are a lot of coincidental elbows or contact. I don’t really know who was at fault to be honest. But it just looked like that was what initiated it.”
Escalation and Ejections
The situation quickly escalated as players, officials, and security personnel rushed to intervene. Sochan and Lu Dort became entangled in a scrum involving more than 10 people, including Castle, De’Aaron Fox, Keldon Johnson, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Cason Wallace, and Aaron Wiggins.
Sochan later reflected on the incident with a smile, “I went for a dunk, and then all I see is just everyone going to one spot. So, like I had to go to the same spot. It was a little scuffle. I think it was pretty playful. It wasn’t anything too serious.”
NBA official James Williams was quick to announce that the play was “under review for an altercation that does not dissolve.” After the review, double technical fouls were issued, and Kenrich Williams, Champagnie, and Dort were ejected. According to Sochan, Dort was ejected for “some rude words,” though these were not directed at the officials.
Coaches and Players React
Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault expressed his thoughts on the ejection, stating, “We have not been a team that’s retaliated very much. We retaliated tonight. We have the worst free-throw differential in the NBA. So, more fouls are being called on us than are being called on our opponents. I think there’s a cumulative frustration.”
Despite the ejections, the Thunder managed to maintain their focus. Kenrich Williams left the game scoreless after 10 minutes, while Dort contributed 9 points, 9 rebounds, and a steal. Champagnie tallied 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting before his exit.
Jalen Williams added a touch of humor to the situation by posting a picture of Dort on his Instagram story, jokingly referring to him as “1st team all crashout.”
Daigneault further commented on the officiating, “If James Williams wants to eject him for that, I think it’s justified. The issue I have with that is I’ve heard with my own ears in the last two weeks other players say similar or worse things to officials with no response.”
- Kenrich Williams: Scoreless in 10 minutes
- Lu Dort: 9 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal
- Julian Champagnie: 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting
As the Thunder celebrated their third straight victory, the game served as a reminder of the intensity and unpredictability that makes the NBA so captivating.
