Miami Heat Stand Firm: No Plans to Trade Jimmy Butler
In the world of NBA basketball, rumors and speculations are as common as a three-point shot. But when it comes to the Miami Heat and their star player, Jimmy Butler, team president Pat Riley has made it crystal clear: Butler is not going anywhere. On Thursday, Riley addressed the swirling rumors head-on, stating unequivocally that the Heat have no plans to trade their six-time All-Star.
“We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches. Therefore, we will make it clear — we are not trading Jimmy Butler,” Riley said in a statement. This firm declaration comes on the heels of reports from league sources, including ESPN’s Shams Charania, suggesting that Butler himself is open to a trade, with potential destinations like the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets being mentioned.
Butler’s absence from the Heat’s recent travel to Orlando has only fueled the fire of speculation. He was ruled out for the game against the Orlando Magic due to return to competition conditioning after twisting an ankle in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, the official reason for missing subsequent games was cited as illness, not the ankle injury.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, speaking at the team’s morning shootaround in Orlando, emphasized the team’s desire to keep Butler. “You have to compartmentalize in this business,” Spoelstra said. “We want Jimmy here. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it. And it’s just unfortunate that you have to control or deal with a lot of the noise on the outside.”
Butler, who is making $49 million this season with a $52 million player option for 2025-26, has not reached an extension with the Heat. Sources indicate that he intends to decline his player option and become a free agent in July. Despite the uncertainty, Butler seems unfazed by the trade talks. “I actually like it,” Butler said earlier this month. “It’s good to be talked about. I don’t think there’s such a thing as bad publicity — to a point.”
At 35, Butler continues to be a formidable force on the court, averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists this season. His leadership has been instrumental in the Heat’s success, leading them to two NBA Finals and an additional Eastern Conference finals appearance in his tenure. The Heat currently hold a 14-13 record, placing them sixth in the Eastern Conference.

As the February 6 trade deadline approaches, the Heat’s stance on Butler will undoubtedly be a topic of conversation. For now, though, Pat Riley’s message is clear: Jimmy Butler is staying put in Miami.
