Miami Heat Stand Firm: No Plans to Trade Jimmy Butler
In the world of professional basketball, rumors and speculations are as common as slam dunks and three-pointers. But when it comes to the Miami Heat and their star player, Jimmy Butler, team president Pat Riley has made it crystal clear: the Heat have no plans to trade their six-time All-Star. This statement comes amidst swirling rumors and reports suggesting otherwise, and Riley’s words aim to put an end to the distractions that have been hovering over the team.
Riley stated, “We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches. Therefore, we will make it clear — we are not trading Jimmy Butler.” This firm declaration was made on Thursday, a day after league sources informed ESPN’s Shams Charania that Butler was open to a trade, with potential destinations including the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets.
Butler, who is currently making $49 million this season with the Heat, has a $52 million player option for the 2025-26 season. However, sources have indicated that Butler intends to decline this option and become a free agent in July. Despite this, the Heat are standing by their star player, emphasizing their desire to keep him in Miami.
As the Heat prepared to face the Orlando Magic on Thursday, Butler was notably absent from the team flight to Orlando. He has been ruled out for the game due to return to competition conditioning, following an ankle twist in a recent game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. This injury caused him to miss the remainder of that game and the next two games against the Orlando Magic and the Brooklyn Nets, although illness was cited as the reason for his absence.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra addressed the situation, stating, “You have to compartmentalize in this business. We want Jimmy here. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it. And it’s just unfortunate that you have to control or deal with a lot of the noise on the outside.”
Butler himself seems unfazed by the trade talks and speculation. Earlier this month, he commented, “I actually like it. It’s good to be talked about. I don’t think there’s such a thing as bad publicity — to a point.”
At 35 years old, Butler is averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists this season. His impressive track record includes leading his teams to the playoffs in 12 of his first 13 seasons, with the Heat reaching two NBA Finals and one additional Eastern Conference finals appearance under his leadership. Currently, the Heat hold a 14-13 record, placing them sixth in the Eastern Conference.
- Jimmy Butler’s current contract: $49 million for this season
- Player option for 2025-26: $52 million

As the February 6 trade deadline approaches, the Heat’s stance on Butler remains firm. While the rumors may continue to swirl, Riley’s statement serves as a clear message to the league and fans alike: Jimmy Butler is staying put in Miami, at least for now.
