Family Ties and National Pride: The Tkachuk Brothers Unite for Team USA
MONTREAL — Keith Tkachuk is a proud father, but when it comes to his sons’ NHL careers, he maintains a neutral stance. However, the 4 Nations Face-Off has given him a unique opportunity to cheer for both his sons, Matthew and Brady, as they join forces on Team USA. This is a rare moment for the Tkachuk family, as the brothers usually play against each other for the Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators, respectively.
“They’re two years apart, so they’ve never really played before together, and when we heard this [tournament was happening], we were so pumped up,” Keith Tkachuk shared with ESPN. “They’re living their dreams. We just pinch ourselves how lucky we are to be able to watch them play in this. It’s the best feeling in the world.”
Seeing siblings on different NHL rosters is uncommon, but having them play together in a best-on-best tournament like the 4 Nations is even more extraordinary. The Tkachuks have always been a unique family, and Keith, during his 18-year NHL career, instilled in his sons the importance of representing the USA.
Keith Tkachuk’s illustrious career includes appearances in four Olympics, two World Cups of Hockey, and two World Junior Championships, earning a silver medal in the 2002 Olympics. Now, Matthew and Brady are creating their own memories on the international stage.
“They don’t need to hear from me how important this is,” Keith said. “They know how important [wearing the U.S. sweater] is, and then to both be able to do it together on the same team, with the best players in the world, they’re really excited about this. But it’s to do it together that means so much to them.”
The Tkachuk brothers wasted no time showcasing their chemistry. Playing on the same line, they were instrumental in Team USA’s 6-1 victory over Finland, each scoring two goals. Matthew also assisted on one of Brady’s goals, bringing their combined point total to five. Matthew’s performance earned him player of the game honors, much to the delight of his brother Brady.
